Frequently Asked Questions What is Swing Dancing? Swing dancing is a style of dance that emerged in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, evolving alongside swing-style jazz music. Several forms of swing dance developed during this period, including the Charleston, Lindy Hop, Balboa, and Shag. Do I need a partner? Nope! In lessons, we rotate partners about every two minutes, and at social dances everyone mixes and dances with everyone. Partner rotation is encouraged at all of our events. Do I need experience? Not at all! Every GSD event begins with a drop-in beginner lesson designed for absolute newcomers—no prior dance experience needed. What should I wear? Whatever you’re comfortable in! You’ll see everything from evening gowns and three-piece suits to gym clothes. A good rule of thumb: if you can do a jumping jack in it, you can dance in it. What kind of shoes are best? Almost anything works. Leather soles are ideal, but socks are surprisingly great too! Casual sneakers like Vans, Keds, Toms, or Bobs are also excellent choices. How much does it cost to attend the weekly lesson & dance? Absolutely nothing! Our Thursday Night Dances are FREE. Although, we do encourage donations via cash or Venmo. What Should I bring to class? Just yourself really! However, we do recommend brining a water bottle. We do have a bottle refill fountain on site. How intense is Swing Dancing & GSD's Lessons? While Swing Dancing is a great way to get fit, GSD's drop-in classes are low impact and are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
